Eat your Veggies! Simple Cooking Methods
August 29, 2006
Vegetables add colour, taste, texture and bulk to our daily diet. There are dozens of different vegetables that can be prepared in literally hundreds of ways. So what’s best?
There is no best. The thing to do is to eat your vegetables, lots of them, everyday in a wide variety of ways and stop worrying about the preparation methods. Variety is the key…
Raw
Many vegetables taste fabulous just the way they are straight out of the garden. Lettuce, tomato, celery, cabbage, onion, radish, carrot are obvious choices here. But they are just as likely to find themselves next to chopped up broccoli, cauliflower, peas, beans and zucchini on a starter platter with dips. Wash ‘em, chop ‘em and eat ‘em. Oh, yeah, you could also make a salad!
Steamed
Steaming heats the vegetable and softens it’s texture. It’s gentler than boiling and allows the vegetable to maintain it’s colour if not overdone. Use a stainless steel steamer that will fit into most good size sauce pans. Make sure you use a pan with a tight fitting lid. There should be enough water to just touch the bottom of the steamer. Water should be simmering the whole time the vegetables are being cooked.
Dog Clicker Training
August 28, 2006
Dog clicker training is so much fun for both dogs and people that the training part just slips in! Dog clicker training gets the dog to figure out what you want, making it an enjoyable game.
This wonderful, cruelty-free method is revolutionizing dog training!
Have you tried it yet? It’s quite easy to learn at a basic level, and once you and your dog get the habit, it can be used for many enjoyable tricks as well as for all the essentials of training. Clickers are inexpensive and widely available at pet stores and on the internet.
Here’s how you might do a short dog clicker training session (and short sessions work best for the dogs’ learning):
1. You have a clicker in your hand, and some small treats in a pocket or nearby. The treats can be small pieces of dry dog food, commercial dog treats, tiny pieces of cheese, or anything you know your dog likes to eat. You have chosen what you are going to train for this session… let’s say it’s “sit.”
2. Your dog wanders over, for whatever reason. He happens to lift his head up, and you click the clicker and give him a treat.

Hills and Holes: Not Part of Your Landscaping Design?
August 28, 2006
Do pests ‘gopher’ your lawn? Chances are, if you have a lawn, you risk the chance of having pests, such as the gopher and his cousin the mole. And, perhaps even those pesky six-legged creatures- ants and other insects- call your grass patches home. Why are these animals and insects attracted to your lawn? And, what can you do to stop them from burrowing and nesting? Those answers and more will follow in this article.
Most household lawns are not large enough to attract so many pests that a serious problem will result, but nonetheless, they can be a nuisance and cause some minor damage to your grassy nook. Insects are not very easy to spot, as some are so small they are naked to the eye, however, they can be identified by dead, brown patches of grass. Telltale signs of moles and gophers are a little more obvious- dirt hills on the top of your lawn, and beneath them, tunnels and holes. Once you identify that you have pests, you then need to decide the best way for you to take care of the problem.
7 Book Publicity Tips for Authors and Small Publishers
August 28, 2006
The biggest mistake authors make when trying to get free publicity is pitching either themselves or their books.
Don’t pitch authors! Pitch issues. Don’t pitch books! Pitch entire shows.
Example: If you wrote a book about how children of divorced parents suffer long-term effects well into adulthood, don’t try to entice TV producers with the book. Entice them with an entire show around the topic of “Children of divorced parents: Do they ever recover?” Then suggest two or three other guests who tie into your topic and could be interviewed, preferably someone who is on the other side of the issue. If you can do that, you’ve just given producers an idea for an entire show, and they’re more likely to bite because you’ve done their work for them.
Here are 6 more book publicity tips:
–Be sure you have a good quality professional photo of yourself. I’m amazed at the number of authors I write stories about who don’t have photos I can use.

Positive Dog Training Methods
August 27, 2006
Dog training can provide a tremendous amount of satisfaction. Every dog should know at least the basics for living with people: come, sit, stay, don’t jump up on people, and so on. Beyond the basics, there is an endless variety of things you and your dog can enjoy doing together. Dogs who are a joy to be with have much more flexibility in what they can do with humans, and so they have more fun. Positive dog training methods are often easier to use, as well.
So what are positive dog training methods? Different people will define them differently, but as a rule of thumb they are techniques that allow you to train your dog without causing it physical pain. So these methods enhance your dogs’ natural trust and willingness. Dr. Ian Dunbar, Karen Pryor, Silvia Kent, Linda Tellington-Jones, and others have greatly expanded the popularity of this field in recent years. Training dogs can be a win-win for both humans and dogs!
How Has Eminem Risen to the Top?
August 27, 2006
How is it that a little white boy from Kansas City has become the most well known rapper in the world? Starting from nothing and eventually moving up to a multi-millionaire, Eminem over the past seven years has been in the eye of the public everywhere you look. He has essentially entered a black man’s business and gone to the top over the course of a few years, but how?
On October 17, 1972 Marshall Bruce Mathers III was born in St. Joseph, MO by his 15 year old mother Debbie. Six months later his father was gone and this began the struggle for Marshall and his mother; one that was just the beginning. Throughout the course of his childhood Marshall and his mother moved numerous times into different houses from Kansas City to Detroit. The maximum time spent in one house was only 3 months, which caused Marshall to attend many different schools making it difficult to cope to the different surroundings and make friends. Every new school he attended he was bullied as he was the new kid. This was something that he could not change as he was never stationed in one school for a long period of time. At the age of 12 he and his mother finally settled in a house in Detroit. He would later use the bullying to his advantage fueling him to get back at all his bullies through songs.
Writing Made Them Rich #5: Peter Mayle
August 27, 2006
Peter Mayle was born in England in 1939.
His fascination with France began at the age ofseventeen when, as the ‘lowliest trainee’ in Shell, hewas instructed to accompany his boss - a Mr. Jenkins -on a trip to Paris, and discovered that there was moreto life than fish-and-chips. Jenkins, needless to say,was a caricature of the Englishman abroad(”personally, I never eat anything I can’tpronounce”).
In his twenties he went to New York and becameadvertising copywriter for David Ogilvy. He laterreturned to England to a comfortable life inadvertising, with a salary higher than the PrimeMinister’s.
At age 35, after ‘one committee meeting too many’, heleft his career as an advertising executive and movedwith his wife and children to Devon in the south ofEngland to write children’s books.
In 1974 one of his books - ‘Where Did I Come From’ -became a best-seller, but because of an unfavorabledeal with the publisher, the book didn’t make himwealthy.
In his late 40’s Peter Mayle moved with his third wifeto Provence in the south of France, where theyrenovated an old farmhouse.
Their experiences became the subject for ‘A Year inProvence’ which was an instant success and spent threeyears on the New York Times best-seller list. It wastranslated into twenty languages and turned into a BBCseries.
