Sailors had it for years. Great explorers had it as well. If you go on an expedition to an ancient Aztec mound, more than likely the archaeologist will have one too - so, why shouldn’t you own one?
No, I’m not speaking of the scurvy that plagued the sailors! No, I’m not speaking of the Loch Ness Monster or Bigfoot, whom explorers claimed to have seen in snowy Manitoba winters. Nor am I speaking of a lost city, which was never truly lost, but simply buried under mounds of earth and recently dug up by an archaeologist.
I’m speaking of journals. Journals? Yes! Keeping a journal can be just as much of an adventure as sailing the high seas, exploring unknown Canadian wilderness or digging in the dirt to find buried treasure.
Journals have been a source of reflection for centuries. My suggestion is to look at your writing career as if you’re an explorer analyzing new-found land; an archaeologist digging up new artifacts and renaming them and so on…
How can you do this? Well, view your journal as a logbook and document your daily happenings. Here is a suggested format for keeping your captain’s log.

You do clean your house don’t you? Well you have to clean your Goldfish’s house too and it’s a lot simpler! Cleaning and maintaining a goldfish tank is a must because this breed is really dirty. Even a teenager’s room would be better than a goldfish tank that’s left alone for a week! The Goldfish are descendants of the scavenger Carp fish and that makes them scavengers too. They will eat a lot, which means that they will produce a lot of fish waste that will degrade the quality of the water. More than a complete overhaul of the tank, you will need to give frequent weekly cleanings.

It’s essential to use during the partial water changes. A typical aquarium gravel vacuum would be a wide tube attached to a narrower siphon tube. Backyard Ponds

Backyard ponds are a great source of fun and enjoyment. With them come all kinds of different nature. From the fish and all of the other wildlife, to all the different pond plants and flowers. It truly is a relaxing hobby, once you get it all set up.
Backyard ponds are not extremely hard to build, and once you do, they’re pretty easy to take care of. The hardest part, by far, is the digging of the pond. Depending on what kind of soil you have in your region will determine how difficult it would be.
The kind of pond to have is entirely up to you. From a small preformed one, to one that’s several thousand gallons that needs a liner, or anything in between.
Try and picture where you sit the most while you’re outside. Now picture where a great place to put a pond would be. Is it a flat area? Is it close to an electrical supply? Is it close to a water source? These are just some of the questions you need to answer, if you’re going to have one of these backyard ponds.
Tracing Your Family History

Let me say straight away that tracing your family ancestry is a great hobby but very addictive, so unless you want to get well and truly hooked, don’t start.
When I travel around the country to Family History Fairs, I am amazed at the number of people who say quite cheerfully, “family history is so easy, I did mine in half an hour on the internet.” If they are happy with that, then good luck to them, but for me, if I cannot prove it, it doesn’t count.
Family history is not about just collecting a pile of names and then trying to fit them all together like a genealogical jigsaw puzzle. You must start with what you know to be true and that is your birth certificate. On that will be the names of your parents, so, if you do not already have access to it, it shouldn’t be hard to obtain their marriage certificate. From there until 1837, you can travel back fairly safely with hatched, matched and dispatched certificates from the Family Records Centre in London. Pre 1837, you have to be able to access parish registers, and this is where the going can get tough. If you are unsure of the area your forbears are from, census returns can be very helpful.

Boy or Girl?
How can you tell whether your Goldfish is male or female? You might want to know because you want to breed them, or give them the right name before Jack turns out to be the mother Goldfish! Here are some clues that might help you sort out the Goldfish boys from the Goldfish girls:
* The female Goldfish are slightly bigger than the males and look even heavier in the abdomen when they are full of eggs.
* Male Goldfish develop white spots on their gills and pectoral called "breeding tubercles" during spawning time.
* Males have midline ridges on their undersides beginning from the back of their pelvic fins and ending at their vent opening. This feature can be absent or smaller in females.
* Males have firm abdomen while in females; the area between the pelvic fins and the anal fins is more pliable.
* Male Goldfish have longer and pointed pectorals as well as stiff fin ray, while females have more rounded pectorals and shorter, finer front fin rays.
Why We Dont Write Our Books

In the ten years that I’ve taught people how to get on with their books, I’ve noticed a phenomenon that I’ll call "Author’s Block." Would-be writers can, indeed, sit down and work when pressed to it. The problem is that they’re not so sure they want the pressure of being an author. But they do want to. But they don’t. And so on.
Ah, the agony of getting on with your book.
Well, I’m here to diffuse that situation with a list of what I think are the key reasons we don’t immediately set down to write. Perhaps this will help the next time you find yourself polishing doorknobs instead of sitting down to write.
* We lie to ourselves about why we can’t write the book. We think our stalling is about lack of time, or too much pressure at work, or not enough solitude in the evening. But guess what? Chances are a deeper, darker reason may be at play, like ‘I’m not supposed to be bigger than Mom’ or ‘What if this thing really takes off?’

Goldfish are a temperate breed that can be found in cool streams, lakes, and ponds throughout Asia and part of Eastern Europe. However, the ones you will buy for your tank have been bred in captivity. Once you’ve decided that the Goldfish is the right one for you ? you will need to find the right kind of goldfish. Take your time and find out more, rather than just rush out and buy the first goldfish you find in the first pet store you come by. Decide on how many you want to buy. If you really want just a single Goldfish, please do a re-think on the issue because it can get lonely and boring for a lone ranger in a tank! Once you’ve though it out, here are some of the things you must keep in mind:
? Choose the right pet shop. Ask people you know who are committed fish keepers for reputed goldfish dealers. These are the people who care and would have professional knowledge of breeding and nurturing goldfish. See if they give a proper fish guarantee. When you enter the shop, look around at all the tanks. Make sure that the tanks are not overcrowded with fish. See if all kinds of fish are thrown together in one tank or care is taken to separate the various species. Look out for dead floating fish. The dead fish could have spread an infection to the other fish.
Quieting the Mind Opening the Heart

To put it simply, the act of meditation involves quieting the mind so you can open the heart. That’s it in a nutshell.
We often believe our hearts are open and we can feel much of what is going on in our lives. Yet to truly open the heart means we have to stop the thinking, the judging, the opinions, the analyzing, the questioning, the doubting, and just love. It’s all that unconditional stuff. The act of doing this, takes practice and patience. Learning to meditate means learning to love. To love our self. To love all others. To love the oneness of all. To love more.
The connection you feel when you ‘plug in’ to this oneness is the most irresistible state of love you will ever feel. Makes it sound like it’s worth the effort doesn’t it? Maybe you’ve had glimpses of this - moments when you felt it, and your heart expanded. The beauty of nature in a spectacular sunset or a magnificent rushing waterfall, a child’s innocent embrace, a long awaited accomplishment, an exhilarating sport or excursion, being with the one you love.
A Few Simple Facts About Purple Martins

Purple Martins are the largest member of the swallow family. However, in flight their wings are more triangular than other swallows.
Males are a handsome lot having a violet head and body with black on wing and tail. Females, youngsters, and first year males are light bellied and look very similar to smaller swallows.
The song of a martin is a distinctive, low pitched liquid rolling twitter and is unmistakeable.
Purple Martins have been known to build their nests in cavities of dead or dying trees, holes in cliffs, or just about anywhere from 3 to 30 feet high. But the most popular nesting place for the martin is in your own back yard int the houses you construct and put up for them. Their nests are made from leaves, grass, straw and twigs and the eggs are white and unmarked.
Purple Martins feed on a variety of flying insects, flies, bees, beetles, flying ants and moths, and here in the south, the dreaded mosquito!!
Learning to Question Your Elephant Child: Who, What, Where, When and Why

Having problems writing? I don’t know why. San Francisco Chronicle columnist Jon Carroll writes up to five columns a week. After all, if he can write five columns, you should be able to write a five-lined poem-but that does not seem to be the case.
How does he do it? Carroll claimed to recite lines from Rudyard Kipling’s “The Elephant Child”:
“I have six humble serving men
They taught me all I knew
Their names are what
And where and when
And why and how and who.”
I’m more than sure that two incentives for Jon Carroll are 1.) Creating deadlines and 2.) His salary! Yes, we writers DO get paid every now and then!
Basing my philosophies on those few lines of Kipling’s “The Elephant Child”, my advice is to “Simply Ask Questions”. Rummage through some old work (whether it be poetry, nonfiction, or fiction) that you’ve written and use the following techniques to enhance your skills. And, then, ask yourself the follow questions.
